Neighbourhood walks: Garbatella

Viaggi di Architettura suggests a walking tour through the Garbatella neighbourhood in Rome. A unique urban design can be found here, alongside various shared green spaces. Join our Neighbourhood walks: Garbatella itinerary and discover some of this area’s famous landmarks.

Garbatella is located in the Ostiense district, and is a part of the so-called Muncipio XI. This working-class  neighbourhood was built in the 1920’s by the ICP as an answer to the severe lack of gardens, greenery and poor living conditions. The old part of the neighbourhood is made up of different “lotto” (project units), consisting of several buildings that are grouped together and surround the common gardens. These gardens serve as an informal meeting point for people living in the lotto. The area has a focus from different architects, having produced a wide range of congregating styles such as Medieval, Baroque and Renaissance.

We suggest visiting the monumental Albergo Rosso, a Palladium Theatre which gives off an authentic feel of Garbatella’s dedication to natural public spaces. The public baths and Fountain of Carlotta are also nice places to visit, where you can enjoy Rome’s natural waters. Garbatella is just like a small city inside of another city and knows of an inspiring  multicultural environment.
